Derived from Old Norse valr (the slain) and Old Norse knútr (a knot), meaning "knot of the slain". The term was coined in later history, as it is not known what name was used by the historical Norse for that symbol.

  1. A symbol consisting of three interlocked triangles, used by ancient Germanic peoples, but of uncertain meaning.
