Etymology[edit]
From the Bierkaai (literally, “beer quay”) in Amsterdam, part of the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. The inhabitants of the Bierkaai had a reputation as pugnacious brawlers. Literally, “to fight against the beer quay”.
