Luxembourgish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably a new formation from vir (before, in front of) +‎ -st (superlative suffix). Alternatively it could continue the older equivalent Old High German furisto (first, front, leading), which had become rare in Middle High German, however. The development -irst-, -ürst--iischt- is phonetically regular. Compare German vorderster and Fürst, Dutch voorste and vorst.

Pronunciation[edit]

Adjective[edit]
