Inherited from Old Polish wełna, from Proto-Slavic *vьlna, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *wílˀnāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wĺ̥h₁neh₂. Doublet of flanela and lanugo. Compare English wool, French laine, German Wolle, Italian lana, Spanish lana.
