From unknown Proto-Algonquian element, perhaps related to *wi·sa·wi·- (“yellow”, prenoun), + *-imini (“berry”), compare páakiim (“cranberry”), wtéehiim (“strawberry”). Cognate with Unami wisahkim (“grape”).
