Etymology[edit]

From blend of word +‎ beatnik.

From the Slavic suffix, as seen on Russian: -ник (-nik). This suffix experienced a surge in English coinages for nicknames and diminutives after the 1957 Russian launch of the Sputnik spacecraft.
