Inherited from Old Polish wrzeciono, from Proto-Slavic *vertenò, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *wertena, from Proto-Indo-European *wert-en-om, from *wert- (to turn, to rotate). Cognate with Lower Sorbian wrjeśeno, Upper Sorbian wrjećeno, Czech vřeteno, Old Church Slavonic врѣтєно (vrěteno), Russian веретено́ (veretenó) and Sanskrit वर्तन (vártana).
