From Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɓɔɔʔ (younger sibling) (compare Khmer ប្អូន (pʼoun, younger sibling)) and *ruuh, *ruh (young girl, virgin). Semantic loan from Sanskrit वत्स (vatsa, calf; child, boy, son).
