x-n-d-r

Etymology 1[edit]

Perhaps from a merger of Arabic شَنَّرَ (šannara) and شَذَّرَ (šaḏḏara), both roughly “to berate, blame, expose someone’s faults, make notorious, put to shame”, and thence generalised to “revealing, making known” in any context. In light of the frequent use in religious context (“spread the gospel”, etc.), however, compare also Aramaic שדר (š-ḏ-r, to send).
