Etymology[edit]
From Ottoman Turkish یلدز (yıldız), from Proto-Turkic *yulduŕ (“star”). A relation with Erendiz (“Jupiter, Libra”) and dialectal Sekendiz (“Saturn”) is possible if yıldız is analyzed as *yal- (“to burn, blaze”) + -dız (an unknown suffix used in constellation names).
