Etymology 2[edit]

From Old Norse ýtri, cognate with Norwegian ytre, Swedish yttre. Formally a comparative of the adverb út (“out”) (Danish ud). The West Germanic languages have a similar adjective: German äußerer (Old High German ūzaro), English utter (Old English ūtera), but it is derived from the adverb *ūter (“outside”).
