North Moluccan Malay[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Presumably from Proto-North Halmahera, but not through Ternate. Compare Tidore yobo, Pagu yabos, and Tobelo l̄oboho, all meaning "swollen". Possibly influenced by a similar term; compare Tobelo l̄abo (wounded), Sahu nyaboto (wound).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈjo.bot/, [ˈjɔ.bɔt̚]

Verb[edit]

yobot

  1. (stative) to be swollen
