From Middle Dutch salm, salme, from Old Dutch *salmo, from Latin salmō (“salmon”), of uncertain origin. Related to Old Saxon salmo (> Middle Low German salme (“salmon”)), Old High German salmo (> German Salm (“salmon”)) from the same Latin source.
