Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German zerbrechen, ziprechen (also as zoprechen, zuprechen, zurprechen), from Old High German zibrehhan zirbrehhan, from Proto-Germanic *tebrekaną, *twizbrekaną (to break apart, break in two), equivalent to zer- +‎ brechen. Cognate with archaic English tobreak.
