From Middle High German zünden, zünten, zunden, from Old High German zunden, zunten, from Proto-West Germanic *tundijan, from Proto-Germanic *tundijaną, zero-grade intensive verb related to *tinnaną (to burn) and *tandijaną (to kindle).
