Japanese[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Analyzed as wasei eigo (和製英語; pseudo-anglicism), derived from high + socks,[1] as a borrowing from the English phrase high socks,[2] or as an abbreviation of English knee-high socks.
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
ハイソックス • (hai sokkusu)
- knee socks, knee highs (a sock that reaches almost up to the knee)
Usage notes[edit]
There is some overlap in meaning between the terms ハイソックス (hai sokkusu) and ニーソックス (nī sokkusu). Generally speaking, the difference is that ハイソックス are often not as long as ニーソックス.
