Persian Etymology[edit]

@ZxxZxxZ: Russian Wiktionary says this comes from Persian balaẋanä “upper room, room above the main entrance, balcony”. Can you figure out which word this is and whether it's Modern Persian? Also, it sounds very familiar, and I have a feeling I've encountered it before in other etymologies, but can't remember where. Also, seemingly contradictorily, Russian Wiktionary says this is related to barbican, which we say is related to Persian باب‌خانه (bâb-khâne). --WikiTiki89 19:59, 14 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

It is بالاخانه (bâlâxâne, upper room). Dehkhoda Dictionary cites a poem from "میرزا عبدالغنی" (I couldn't find much about him), which it says is cited in Anandaraj Dictionary. I couldn't find باب‌خانه. BTW I've seen some incorrectly derive "balcony" from بالاخانه (bâlâxâne, upper room). --Z 09:16, 15 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
