Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Forssman reconstructs an ablauting root, *ὀϝειγ-/*ὀϝιγ-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃uóigo-, and cognate with Sanskrit विज् (vij, to shake, tremble) and वेग (vega, violent movement, momentum).
