Inherited from Old Ruthenian ба́вити (báviti), the sense "to entertain" is probably a semantic loan from Middle Polish bawić; from Old East Slavic бавити (baviti); from Proto-Slavic *baviti. Formally, a causative of бу́ти (búty).
