Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *bʰoHu-eye-, from *bʰuH-. Morphologically *byti +‎ *-iti.

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian bùvintis (to sojourn). Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit भावयति (bhāváyati, to cause to be, cherish, refresh).

  2. (transitive) to engage in, to entertain
