Inherited from Proto-Slavic *kapъka. By surface analysis, ка́пя (kápja, to drip) +‎ -ка (-ka).

Probably from Proto-Turkic *kap- (to snatch, take; to bite).[1] Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (kap-, to close, contact, catch).[2] Also compare Proto-Indo-European *kap- (to seize, grab); the similarity may reflect an onomatopoeic origin of both stems.[2] Compare Turkish kapan (trap, snare), Russian капка́н (kapkán) (borrowed from Turkic), Crimean Tatar qapqan, and Georgian ხაფანგი (xapangi, trap).
