Borrowed from Classical Mongolian ᠤᠯᠤᠰ᠋ (ulus), from Middle Mongol ᠤᠯᠤᠰ᠋ (ʾwɽwz /⁠ulus⁠/), from Common Turkic *uluš (country, city). Doublet of native улад (ulad, people) and Russian borrowing улус (ulus, type of village).
