The older form is պարհ (parh), a Northwestern Iranian borrowing: compare Middle Persian 𐫛𐫀𐫍𐫡 (pʾhr /⁠pāhr⁠/, “watch-post”), [Book Pahlavi needed] (pʾs /⁠pās⁠/, “guard, watch”), Persian پاس (pâs, “guard, watch”). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *páHθrah, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂- (“to guard”).
