Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The older form is պարհ (parh), a Northwestern Iranian borrowing: compare Middle Persian 𐫛𐫀𐫍𐫡 (pʾhr /pāhr/, watch-post), [Book Pahlavi needed] (pʾs /pās/, guard, watch), Persian پاس (pâs, guard, watch). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *páHθrah, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂- (to guard).

Noun[edit]

պահ (pah)

  1. watch, guard
  2. hour, moment, time

      Ապա զհոգիս մարմնոյս իմ աւանդէի։

      • Translation by S. Peter Cowe
O for the moment when I'd see you,
Kiss your right hand that touched the Lord,
That for a time I'd gaze upon your face with my eyes,
Then would I yield up the ghost from my body.
