Etymology[edit]
From Dutch Japan or Portuguese Japão, from Malay Jepang, from Sinitic 日本 (Rìběn), e.g. Min Nan 日本 (Ji̍t-pún). It's one of the Arabic country names which require the definite article اَل (al-).
