Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Iranian *ǰáyHati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ǰáyHati, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷéyh₃eti (“to live”), from the root *gʷeyh₃-.
Cognate with Avestan 𐬘𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (juuaiti), Persian زیستن, Pashto ژوند کول (žwënd kawël), Sanskrit जीवति (jīvati). More distantly related to Ancient Greek βείομαι (beíomai).
