Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀁𑀕𑀼𑀝𑁆𑀞 (aṃguṭṭha), from Sanskrit अङ्गुष्ठ (aṅguṣṭha),[1] from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hangúštʰas (thumb, big toe), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eng- (joint). Doublet of अंगुष्ठ (aṅguṣṭh). Cognate with Punjabi ਅੰਗੂਠਾ (aṅgūṭhā), Gujarati અંગૂઠો (aṅgūṭho), Marathi अंगठा (aṅgṭhā), and Rajasthani अंगुठौ (aṅguṭhau).
