Borrowed from Old Javanese awatāra (incarnation, embodiment; to appear; appearance), from Sanskrit अवतार (avatāra, descent of a deity from a heaven), a compound of अव (ava, off, away, down) and the vṛddhi-stem of the root तरति (√tṝ, to cross).
