Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Old Javanese awatāra (“incarnation, embodiment; to appear; appearance”), from Sanskrit अवतार (avatāra, “descent of a deity from a heaven”), a compound of अव (ava, “off, away, down”) and the vṛddhi-stem of the root तरति (√tṝ, “to cross”).
