Etymology[edit]
Compound of 日本 (Nihon, “Japan”, on'yomi) + 鹿 (shika, “deer”, kun'yomi).[1][2][3] The shika changes to jika as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

- As with many terms that name organisms, this term is often spelled in katakana, especially in biological contexts (where katakana is customary), as ニホンジカ.
