From Italian Gallipoli, from Turkish and late variant forms of Byzantine Greek Καλλίπολις (Kallípolis, “Callipolis”), from the combining form of Ancient Greek κάλλος (kállos, “beauty, beautiful”) + πόλις (pólis, “city, city-state”). Doublet of Gelibolu, Callipolis, and Kallipolis.
