German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Portuguese cocos, plural of coco (literally grinning face), probably due to the three holes in the shell resembling a human face.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈkoːkʊs/ (clearly commonest, though unmentioned by prescriptive sources; Kokusnuss is a frequent misspelling)
    • (file)
  • IPA(key): /ˈkoːkos/, [ˈkoːkoˑs] (original form, but now rarer because this syllable type exists in German only when -s is a recognisable grammatical ending)
  • IPA(key): /ˈkoːkɔs/ (entirely uncommon in northern and central Germany, perhaps used by southern speakers whose /ɔ/ is [o])

Noun[edit]

Kokos n (strong, genitive Kokos, no plural)

  1. (collective) the flesh of the coconut; its taste
Synonym: Kokosnuss (also a single fruit)
  2. (collective) coir; the fibres won from the shells of coconuts
    Synonym: Kokosfasern (plural)
