Proto-Germanic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰédʰyeti, from *gʷʰedʰ- (to ask for; beseech), or alternatively from *bʰedʰ- (to bend, bow) (compare the root of *bindaną). Not, as sometimes suggested, related to *bīdaną (to wait).[1] More at *bedō.
