From *jabai (on (the) condition), dative case of *jabą (condition, stipulation, hesitation, doubt), from *ja, demonstrative/relative pronoun; or from Proto-Indo-European *Hyós (already). Cognate with Lithuanian jei (if, when), Albanian po.
