Alternative forms[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Two proposed etymologies:
- A reduplication of Hokkien 宋 (sòng), in relation to the Song dynasty.[1]
- From sungsong, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *suŋsuŋ (“go against wind or current”). The attribution to China is presumably connected with sailing problems in reaching mainland China from the Philippines, according to Blust and Trussel (2010).[2]
Pronunciation[edit]
- (Standard Tagalog) IPA(key): /suŋˈsoŋ/, [sʊnˈsoŋ]
- Rhymes: -oŋ
- Homophone: sungsong
- Syllabification: Sung‧song
Proper noun[edit]
Sungsóng (Baybayin spelling ᜐᜓᜅ᜔ᜐᜓᜅ᜔)
- (historical) China
- Synonym: Tsina
