Etymology[edit]
- @Anylai, Wyang, ZxxZxxZ, Aryamanarora, Vahagn_Petrosyan Does anyone know anything more about this word?
- Ramstedt says Kalmyk is from Kirghiz (checked a Kir. dictionary, nothing), compares it to Ottoman badränǯ (checked Redhouse, checked tureng, nothing) which he derives from Persian (I don't have a handy Persian dictionary, but I looked up the word for mint, nothing), I flipped through a few more dictionaries (Turkic, Pahlavi, Tibetan, ...) and all I got is भद्रमुञ्ज (bhadramuñja) which is not even similar to mint nor to our word, but it does look a bit like badränǯ, does anyone have further cognates?
