Derivation

If memory serves, this term first appears in correspondence between the Sui Dynasty and Japan, wherein the Japanese court is the first to use the term. Would that not make this a Japanese coinage? If so, then surely the Chinese entry shouldn't list the Japanese term as a descendant? @Atitarev: It's unclear what dialect they speak. There are certainly some dialects that use that reading (if we check Forvo), but I don't think it's used in Shanghainese from what I can tell. — justin(r)leung _{{ (t...) | c=› }} 22:57, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Pronunciations

For the Japanese section, I see that there is only one pronunciation included, which is the Tokyo 標準語 version where the ほ is emphasized. But, where I live now in Kansai, everyone around me appears to be saying にほん with emphasis on the に。Is this also a pronunciation variant?
