Catalan[edit]

From bando, an earlier variant form of ban (public proclamation, edict), perhaps from Frankish *ban, *bann, from Proto-West Germanic *bannan, from Proto-Germanic *bannaną (to proclaim). Maybe influenced from Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍅𐌾𐌰𐌽 (bandwjan), meaning "to signal".
