Etymology[edit]
Unclear. Possibly a contraction of an earlier *bedhtë, with -të adjectival suffix, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰed-rós, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰed- (“to improve, make better”). Cognate with English better, Sanskrit भद्र (bhadra, “blessed; good; excellent”), Avestan 𐬵𐬎𐬠𐬀𐬜𐬭𐬀 (hubaδra, “fortunate”). Alternatively to be compared with Lydian 𐤡𐤠𐤯𐤯𐤬𐤳 (pattoš, “king”)), Ancient Greek Ancient Greek βᾰσῐλεύς (basileús), Illyrian Bato, and Proto-Indo-European *bʰéh₂ti (“to speak”).
