Maltese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably from Arabic أَعْماق (ʔaʕmāq, depths), plural of عُمْق (ʕumq). Alternatively from the nominalised adjective عَمِيق (ʕamīq, deep), or from a blend of them. The forms would have merged phonetically in Maltese. Compare għammieq.

Pronunciation[edit]
