From Proto-Vietic *c-guːʔ ~ *c-kuːʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟkaw; cognate with Bahnar chơgơu and Proto-Katuic *hŋkaw.

The "romantic partner" sense is probably derived from gấu bông (teddy bear).
