Vietnamese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

gờ (gee) +‎ kép (double).

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

gờ kép

  1. (informal) The name of the Latin-script digraph GH/gh

Usage notes[edit]

  • Used to say "a 'hard' g that only occurs before e, ê, i". There's really no such thing as a "soft g". gi is a digraph per se rather than just a "soft g" occurring before an i. Both the digraphs gh and gi were merely borrowed from Italian orthography.
