Compound of madrasah + sanawiah, from Arabic مَدْرَسَة ثَانَوِيَّة (madrasa(t) ṯānawiyya), ثَانَوِيَّة (ṯānawiyya, “secondary, minor”) + مَدْرَسَة (madrasa).

In Indonesia, sekolah menengah pertama is used by school which is under supervision of Ministry of Education. Islamic school supervised by Ministry of Religious Affairs use madrasah tsanawiyah.
