Etymology

Related to or derived from moale (plural moi), or from muia, with the suffix -ină. Other attempts have been made to link it to a derivative of Vulgar Latin *mollināre (cf. the verb moina), or from *mollimen, or *molliō, molliōnis, or to a lost early Romanian *moiu, from Latin root *mollius. One theory suggests a parallel with doină. A derivation from Slavic *močiti is improbable.
