Etymology[edit]

From Ripuarian Central Franconian pengelig, pingelig and Low Franconian, in Ripuarian derived from Peng, Ping (pain), originally in the sense of German wehleidig (over-sensitive, whiny). Formally a doublet of standard peinlich (hurtful; embarrassing).
