Inherited from Old Czech počieti, from Proto-Slavic *počęti. By surface analysis, po- + -čít. Compare načít and začít.

- to begin, to commence, to start, to originate
- to conceive, to beget (of a man or a woman)
- počít dítě ― to conceive a child
- (reflexive with si) to behave, to do
