Etymology[edit]

Compound of sekolah menengah (“high school (US), secondary school (UK)”) +‎ tinggi (“high”), calque of Japanese 高等中学校(こうとうちゅうがっこう) (kōtōchūgakkō, literally “higher secondary (middle) school”). The post-war Japanese term is 高等学校(こうとうがっこう) (kōtōgakkō).

The terms for general upper secondary education are sekolah menengah tinggi (1942-1946), sekolah menengah umum atas (1946-1950), sekolah lanjutan tingkat atas (1963-1967), sekolah menengah umum (1994-2004), and sekolah menengah atas (1950-1961, 1968-1993, 2004-now).
