From Old Norse þvers, from Proto-Germanic *þwerhas (across), cognate with Swedish tvers, Swedish tvärs, Old English þwēores, Middle High German twerhes, Middle Low German dwers (adj), Dutch dwars (adj). An adverbial genitive of the adjective *þwerhaz (cross, adverse) (Danish tvær).
