Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *umpi, possibly borrowed from Proto-Germanic *umbi (around, about, by, near), which was perhaps already borrowed into Proto-Finno-Saamic (compare Northern Sami oppa (whole; quite a)). Alternatively possibly related to Komi-Zyrian об (ob).
