Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑁆ō𑀳𑀮𑀻 (kōhalī), ultimately from a substrate language. The Middle Indo-Aryan word was hypercorrected into Sanskrit कुष्माण्ड (kuṣmāṇḍa). Doublet of કોહળું (kohaḷũ). Cognate with Bengali কুমড়া (kumṛa) and Hindi कुम्हड़ा (kumhaṛā).
